Interesting view.

3GPP R9 is actually not far away. Moving the "CS over PS" to R9 may be just a matter of securing R8 roadmap and LTE standard delivery in the political battlefield.

I'm pretty sure many telecom players would find it quite attractive, just as "CS over HSPA".

A good way to benefit from packetized voice while securing the legacy base...

What about CS FallBack? Isn't it a solution to voice calls without IMS for LTE? After all, operators have already a 2G/3G network deployed. They do not need to deploy IMS for voice calls. They can start using LTE for mobile broadband only and use it for voice calls later on. In the meantime, CS fallback is the standard solution to perform voice calls.

What is your view on it?

Pete

I can confirm Davide's view: it is now clear that voice in LTE Release 8 will be supported through the feature called "CS Fallback" (which means actually that LTE Release 8 will not support voice, but will implement the mechanisms to "redirect" the mobile originated/terminated calls to legacy CS systems when the mobile is camped or active on LTE.)

PierreL

I'm fine also with CS Fallback.

The only drawback is a degradation in call setup time for all LTE terminal owners, corresponding to the requested time to perform the redirection.
