Hi guys, what is not clear to me is why LTE won't be able to provide Call services (VOIP) in the first phase.

Hi,

LTE is designed as an IP only technology similarly as DSL in the fixed line world. Hence it has to rely on a voice solution that is put on top of it rather than being included in the design.

Personally, I think the industry is not acting very smartly at the moment by saying either its IMS/VoIP (i.e. IMS centralized services) or its legacy (CS fallback), and I am a strong supporter of the eMSC approach I wrote about here: http://tinyurl.com/4qpmy3

The call setup delay will surely increase due to the handover from LTE to 2G/3G network. Are there any numbers available for this delay?

In my opinion (and from what I have seen in the press & product roadmaps) the first LTE products will be purely data only (datacards/USB modems/embedded modules) and it will be a couple of years after that until we see the first handsets with LTE capability. This will give the standards bodies and the manufacturers a bit more time to come up with a pragmatic solution to voice calls and LTE. Something similar happened here in the UK when 3G was introduced and there were problems around handing over voice calls from 3G to 2G.

Nice summary of the feature.
Actually, the "CS over LTE" feature that you advocates, Martin, is expected for Rel-9. So "CS Fallback" is really something for those who really really want voice from Rel-8. And now it seems that not so many actors will push to have voice services in Rel-8 (some will, however).
The call setup delay is not expected to increase dramatically, even if I did not see any detailed figures yet.

Thanks Martin for the reply,By the way as per the standards they have removed flow control mechansim in RLC as per the standards.How is it handled then?which layer takes the responsiblity Can any body comment on this?

Hi Adriano,

Yes, I can imagine that this might happen to some degree. However, over the
top voip won't get qos and handovers to circuit switched which I think is
crucial for mobility.

Hi Mathu,

There is no flow control as such in any of the layers. It was observed that the eNB could perform some kind of flow control by adjusting the grant.
