Hi Martin, Good post, just curious to know if the interface between MME can interface with legacy HLR (MAP) or only HSS via Diameter protocol. I believe S6d interface is available for HLR but if Diameter is stipulated in standards I am wondering how this will roaming scenarios where MAP is the predominant signaling used in core today.

Nice Post Martin!!

Hi Subbzz,

In all parts, TS 23.401 shows S6a to be used for MME interconnection with the HSS. I would be very surprised to see any other spec that puts MAP into the SAE. After all, it's a legacy SS7 protocol and 3GPP has tried hard (maybe too hard in some respects, think voice calls) to create an IP only network.

So as LTE/SAE is a great undertaking anyway, I think that supporting an IP/DIAMETER based protocol for HSS interaction while roaming won't be a showstopper.

Cheers,
Martin
