Hello Martin, Thanks for the insightful post as usual.

A quick response.

When you say:
>>>
Speaking of ecosystems: I think for a free and open source OS it is much simpler to get an ecosystem in place because the community can help vs. a closed source OS where the burden of fostering an ecosystem lies in the hands of the company that owns it.
<<<
note that - when I said 'ecosystem' I specifically said a commercially viable ecosystem i.e. just having a developers and / or a forum discussing specifics of code is not (as per my defintion) an 'ecosystem'. ie the commercial model needs to be in place. Thats the distinction I was trying to draw. hope that helps. thanks for the blog. kind rgds Ajit

Not quite the same question, but Joel Spolsky has an interesting comment on complementary products, ie those required to get value from your own product.

I have bought two N770 internet tablets from Nokia, and I agree that the hurdles to setting up a development environment are too high. On the other hand, I think that the reason the internet tablet has not done so well is the lack of ubiquitous internet access (at least here in the US). The smart phones that are coming should not have this problem.

I think Google has put a lot of work into lowering the entry barrier to Android development, and I expect a lot of people (over the next ten years) to be developing applications for Android who are not otherwise developers. I also expect open wireless networks to evolve in the US in the same period, again thanks to Google.
