This is the end...

It's certainly the end of an era and probably the end of Nokia if this doesn't work out. Let's hope that this partnership works out better than Microsoft's last major alliance with a telecoms equipment manufacturer (anyone still remember ICA?)

Android is currently the way to go. And has been for some month now.

Since Android became so big they have apps for virtually everything. For someone depending on somewhat ninche products not only, but partly, for ideological reasons (Debian desktop user over here), the sheer size of the user base means that people will come up with solutions. If you use Evolution for PIM, you can use SyncEvolution and buy this little app:

I use Thunderbird and for address sync someone already came up with a solution:

Though I haven't found such an easy solution for the calendar yet.

And I would recommend buying a phone that is supported by CyanogenMod.

Perhaps Microsoft genuinely wants to use Nokia to leap frog WP7 into the smart phone market, but if it fails Microsoft will not go out of business; Nokia, on the other hand, may very well go out of business. This is a win-win for Microsoft, since it removes a competitor who was using open source software development as a business strategy, and the last thing Microsoft wants to see is successful competitors using open source software development.

If Nokia had never open sourced Symbian, would this deal have happened?
